Adding and removing VAT

Choose Add VAT when you have a price without tax and need the total, for example when quoting a customer. Choose Remove VAT when the price already includes tax and you need the net amount, for example when recording an expense.

The result shows the net price, the VAT and the gross price, and how the gross splits between the two.

Standard rates across Europe

Standard VAT rates run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, with the UK at 20% and Germany at 19%. The EU requires member states to set a standard rate of at least 15%.

Pick a country from the list and the rate is filled in. If your item has a reduced rate, or your country is not listed, choose Other and type the rate.

A common mistake

The most frequent error is taking the percentage off the total. VAT is a percentage of the net price, so the right way to strip it out is to divide by one plus the rate. The calculator does this for you and shows the working in the breakdown.

Questions people ask

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + the VAT rate). At 20%, 100 becomes 100 × 1.20 = 120. The VAT itself is 20.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + the VAT rate). At 20%, 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100. Do not subtract 20% of the gross price: 20% of 120 is 24, which would give the wrong net of 96.

What is the standard VAT rate in the UK?

The UK standard rate is 20%. There is also a 5% reduced rate and a 0% zero rate for certain goods and services, such as most food and children’s clothes.

Are the country rates here up to date?

They are the standard rates as listed in several published 2026 tables, and the calculator states the date. Governments change rates from time to time, and this tool does not include reduced rates, so confirm with the tax authority for anything official.

What is reverse charge VAT?

For many business-to-business sales within the EU, the buyer accounts for the VAT instead of the seller, and the seller invoices at 0%. This calculator does not apply that rule. Use the custom rate set to 0 for the invoice amount, and take advice for the details.
